The Missionary Who Sends and the Missionary Who Goes

After the Korean War, when half of the Korean popualtion was scattered all over the country, I moved from Hwang Hae Do to Koon San, and then to Ma San in order to find a more peaceful place.

After I graduated from high school, I got into my dream school, Chong Shin seminary, in March of 1955. Even in the midst of that chaotic time, 700 peole applied and 120 people were accepted.

During our first Psychology of Education class, professor Chang gave out surveys in order to gather some information about the students. In the second class, professor Chang asked, "who is Young Choon Chang?" I raised my hand and said, "it is I." Then the professor said, "you said you came to seminary in order to become a missionay to the Soviet Union. What is your reason for this?" I replied, "I was raised in North Korea as the son of an elder and went through much hardship and agony because I came from a Christian home. I now want to repay that sufering with love. I want to share the life that comes from the gospel to those who say that there is no God."

About thirty years later, in 1991, as director of North Missons, I sent pastor Paul Kim to Moscow and after a year sent Pastor Gil as a missionay to Almaty, Khazakstan. Since then, we have sent out six other missionaries to former Soviet nations.

As a result of these efforts, we ordained five pastors from former Soviet natins in 1995, three more in 1998, and nine more from Moscow and one from Almaty in 2001. In all, we have ordained eighteen pastors from these nations. One of these men was a general and five were colonels.

These communists who destroyed Korea during the Korean War knelt down before the cross and became servants of God. These men who do not have total religious freedom in their countries confess that they are willing to lose their lives in their work for the gospel.

In the end, I did not become a missionay who goes but became a missionay who sends. Oh how deep and rich is the wisdom and knowledge of the Lord! Who can fathom the way of the Lord! Missons require both missionaries who send and missionaries who go. In other words, there need to be churches who send missionaries and people who are willng to be sent out by these churches. And so both types of missionaries are equally important. In some ways, the one who sends is more important as he has more control.

Just as nations train their soldiers for fighting in order to enlarge their territories, churches send servants of the gospel to expand the kingdom of God. Ultimately, the one who really sends is Jesus Christ and the churches and its members must pray and support their missionaries as they obey their Lord. And so in that way, we all must become missionaries.

The Lord, our Savior is now telling us, “Either go or send."
Am I a missionary who sends or a missionary who goes? We must choose either one or the other. Missions is a requirement for all Christians.

During these last days, as we approach the trumpet sounds that we will all hear one day, let us choose to become missionaries. To be a missionary who sends or a missionary who goes.
“Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."(Matt 28:18-20)
