Prayer for Peace

The history of mankind is a history of war. From whom did fighting and suffering originate? When the God of love created the Garden of Eden, He blessed Adam and Eve to love each other and live in the peaceful garden. However, when Eve who was tempted by the snake to eat of the forbidden fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and then gave the fruit to her husband, Adam, to eat, they broke God’s command and were kicked out of the Garden of Eden.
Cain who was the eldest son of Adam and Eve, murdered his brother Abel in the fields because of jealousy. Cain who had killed his brother, had to listen to the cries of his brother’s blood all his life, living in anxiety and fear as a restless wanderer. Starting then, man’s world became full of lies and hatred, and fighting and the suffering of death did not cease. And thus, man’s history became a history of suffering, a history of wars that reeked of blood. We live in a world in which husbands and wives who had once vowed to love each other fight at home and shift blame one each other, and siblings fight each other out of envy and jealousy, and brothers of the same race face off and fire at one another.
In the early morning of June 25th, 1950, when the whole county was quietly asleep, the sounds of cannons and gunfire blasted and shook the peaceful territory of our country. War had broken out. This war was not a war between different countries, but was a civil war between countrymen. And now 60 years have passed, and that war has still not ended. Because of a cease fire truce, a temporary cease fire has been in effect, but for the past60 long years, the South and North have continued to fight each other in less visible ways ? battling over ideology and through spying on each other so that tensions have gotten worse between the two.
This past March 26th, the North Koreans sank a South Korean war ship, which resulted in 46 sailors dying. Even though they are clearly guilty of this attack, they mock South Korea and provoke them towards war. Those of us who have experienced the Korean War firsthand can never forget the devastating tragedy. Even now, around the world, there are wars occurring which reek of blood.
Peace! It is what every generation and all nations hope for. How can we enjoy this hope, which is every man’s desire? This can be achieved by placing the King of kings, Jesus Christ upon the throne of our hearts.
Jesus Christ gives true peace to suffering mankind, and is the Prince of peace who has come in order to give eternal peace. The Lord says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid(Jn. 14:27).”
As the nightmare of war once again comes before our eyes, there is only one way for our people to survive, and that is for Christians to pray to God in one heart and will and in the name of Jesus Christ who became the Prince of peace.
O Lord! The Prince of peace! Grant us peace on earth! Grant us peace in this American land in which we live! Grant us peace in our Korean peninsula! And peace to the whole world! Grant us peace!
