2011년 신년 칼럼 오늘 미국을 위시하여 전 세계 기독교회는 새롭게 거듭나야 살 길이 있다고 본다. 교회는 진리의 기둥과 터가 되어야 한다. 산 위에 세운 등대처럼 갈 길을 잃고 방황하는 사람들에게 갈 길을 제시해 주는 선지자적 임무를 다해야 한다. 그런데 지금의 기독교회는 그 임무를 다하지 못하고 있다. 꺼져 가는 등불, 맛을 잃은 소금처럼 세상으로부터 불신을 받고 있는 이유가 무엇인가? 새해에는 분명히 그 이유가 무엇인지 깨달아 달라져야 한다.구태의연한 유럽의 정치와 종교에서 살 길을 찾지 못한 소수의 청교도들이 신앙의 자유를 찾아 1621년 메인플라워 호를 타고 대서양을 건너 미 대륙으로 건너왔다. 청교도들은 철저히 하나님의 말씀에 기초하여 미합중국을 건설하여 300여 년 만에 전 세계를 압도하는 선진국으로 미국을 우뚝 세웠다.그 힘의 원동력은 청교도 운동이었다. 청교도운동은 성경중심의 신앙 운동이다. 역사가들은 말하기를 청교도들은 성경 밖에서 만나는 성경적인 사람이었다고 한다. 그들이 이런 칭호를 받기까지는 하루아침에 저절로 된 것이 아니라 하나님 말씀에 대한 절대 충성이 있었다. 그들은 언제 어디서 무엇을 하든지 성경에서 교리와 생활의 근거를 찾아 실천하였다. 따라서 그들의 생활 철학은 신본주의였다. 청교도들은 하나님의 주권과 인간의 책임과 실천에 대한 강한 확신이 있었다. 청교도들은 예배와 말씀교육과 기도를 통하여 하나님의 뜻을 발견하고 그에 따른 인간의 책임을 강조하였다. 그래서 주일성수를 엄격히 지켜 하나님을 거룩히 섬겼고 엿새 동안 힘써 일하며 생활 속에서 하나님을 섬겼다. 미국의 모든 화폐에는 1센트부터 100달러 지폐까지 ‘In God We Trust’‘우리는 하나님을 믿는다’라는 글이 쓰여 있다. 이것은 청교도들이 얼마나 하나님의 주권을 의지하였나를 보여준다. 하나님의 도움과 축복이 아니면 결코 아름답고 위대한 나라가 이루어질 수 없다는 하나님 절대 신앙이 그들의 삶에서 나타난 실질적인 증거이다.그들은 교회와 국가의 구별을 주장하였고 교회는 민주적 방법으로 선택된 장로들에 의하여 다스림을 받아야 한다고 주장하였다. 또한 교회의 성장을 위한 교육의 방편으로 설교의 중요성과 존엄성을 강조하였다. 특별히 하나님의 형상으로 지음 받은 어린 자녀들에게는 교회와 부모가 공동 책임을 가지고 어려서부터 성경말씀을 가르치며 생활화할 수 있도록 철저히 교육했다. 그리하여 하나님 주권신앙으로 미국과 세계를 지배하는 훌륭한 인재들을 배출하였다. 이것이 청교도들의 무한한 재산이 되어 그 후손들까지 축복을 받게 된 것이다.청교도들의 정치적 사상이나 통치자에 대한 견해를 살펴보면 그들은 개혁주의자들의 법치주의 사상과 언약사상을 받아들여 통치자는 하나님의 질서를 보호하기 위하여 세운자로 보았다. 대부분의 미합중국 대통령이 취임할 때 온 국민 앞에서 성경책에 손을 얹고 취임선서를 한 후 마지막에 ‘그러므로 하나님이여 나를 도우소서!’‘So help me God!’이라고 말한다. 이는 그 직임이 전능하신 하나님이 주시는 직분임을 엄숙히 선서하는 것이다. 청교도들은 통치자는 그릇된 사상이나 악행하는 자로부터 백성을 보호하며 잘못된 신앙으로부터 교회와 국가를 지킬 의무가 있다고 보았다. 또한 백성들은 위정자들을 위하여 기도하고 저들을 존경하며 국가와 교회가 정한 세금과 그 밖의 국민적 의무를 다하고 저들의 합법적인 명령에 순종해야 한다고 하였다.위에 설명한 청교도운동과 정치, 사회, 문화의 저변에 깔려 있는 그들의 사상을 통하여 알 수 있듯이 청교도들은 하나님의 말씀에 기초하여 충실하게 국가를 건설하고 교회를 설립하였을 뿐 아니라 그 말씀을 생활에서 실천하였으므로 하나님께서 그들이 건국한 나라를 300여 년 동안 축복하시고 평화와 번영으로 인도해 주셨다.그러나 20세기에 들어서면서 정치 지도자를 위시하여 입법부와 사법부, 교육부 등 각 기관들이 하나님의 말씀을 무시하고 거역하는 과오를 범하므로 인하여 미국의 청교도사상이 희석되고 그 자리를 잃게 된 것이다. 이로 인하여 오늘과 같은 국가적 위기를 당하게 된 것을 우리 모두는 자각해야 한다. 그리고 다시 새롭게 국가, 사회, 교회가 말씀으로 돌아가는 길만이 우리의 살 길임을 알고 회개하여야 할 것이다.어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 동일하신 살아 계신 하나님의 말씀에 귀를 기울이자. “여호와로 자기 하나님을 삼은 나라 곧 하나님의 기업으로 빼신 바 된 백성은 복이 있도다”(시 33:12). “이스라엘아 네 하나님 여호와께 돌아오라 네가 불의함을 인하여 엎드러졌느니라 너는 말씀을 가지고 여호와께로 돌아와서…(호 14:1, 2). Take Words with You and Return to the Lord Christian churches in America as well as in other countries around the world, need a revival in order to survive. The church needs to be a pillar and foundation of truth. Like a lantern set up on top of a mountaintop, the church needs to faithfully carry out its duty of guiding the lost and wandering towards the right path. However, today’s Christian churches are unable to fully fulfill this calling. Like a light that is flickering out, and like salt that has lost its saltiness, the churches today are being questioned by the world. In the New Year, the church must figure out what the reason for the world’s skepticism and distrust of the church is and start the process towards change. The small minority group of Puritans who no longer felt they could no longer find a way of life in Europe which remained unchanged when it came to politics or religion, sought out freedom in 1621 by crossing over the Atlantic ocean on the Mayflower ship. The Puritans firmly established the United States upon the Word of God as its foundation, and within 300 years, the United States became a leading nation in the world. The driving force behind the nation’s strength was the Puritan movement. The Puritan movement is a Word-centered faith movement. Historians have said that the Puritans were biblical characters found outside the Bible. This designation of the Puritans did not happen overnight, but there was unwavering faithfulness towards the Word of God that led to them being called such men of God. Whenever, wherever, whatever they did, they did it according to the Bible applying the principles of the Bible into every aspect of their own lives. It followed that their philosophy of life was God-centered. The Puritans had strong beliefs regarding God’s sovereignty, man’s responsibilities and duties, and strict application of the Word. The Puritans believed that they could attain God’s will through worship, Bible teaching, and prayer, and believed in man’s duty to follow His will. Thus, they were very strict about serving a Holy God by keeping the Sabbath day holy and equally diligent about serving God by working hard on the remaining six days of the week. On every coin and bill of American money, from a penny to a hundred dollar bill, are the words, “In God We Trust”. This shows just how much the Puritans depended on God’s providence. This is evidence of how they applied into their daily lives, their unwavering belief that without complete trust in God and without His help and blessings, a beautiful and great nation could not come about. They demanded the separation of church and state, and believed the church should be led by elders, who were chosen democratically. Furthermore, they emphasized church growth through education that came through sermons. Especially when it came to children who were created in God’s image, they taught that the church and parents held dual responsibility to teach children the Word of God and its application into daily life starting when they were young. Thus, they produced noteworthy people who were able to lead the country and the world through their faith in the Sovereignty of God. This became the legacy of the Puritans and even their descendants were blessed because of it. If we study the history of the Puritans’ politics or government, they saw government leaders and lawmen to be those who were put in place in order to protect and preserve the order established by the sovereign God. In most of the inaugurations of United States’ Presidents, the President would place his hand over the Bible in front of his people and after his vows say the final words, “So help me God!” This is recognizing that the almighty God Himself has given him this leadership position. The Puritans believed that a leader had the duty of protecting his people from those who had incorrect beliefs or had evil intents towards others. Moreover, the people were expected to pray for their leaders, respect them, and carry out their duties as citizens, such as paying the taxes appointed by the states or the church, and obeying the lawful regulations of their leaders. As described above, when we study the Puritan philosophy of life and their thoughts, ethics, and principles as it pertained to government, society, and culture, we can learn that they established their country and founded their church on the foundation of God’s Word. Furthermore, they applied the Word into their lives to the extent that God blessed their country through the 300 years with peace and prosperity. However, as we entered the 20thcentury, the various departments of government have ignored and rejected the Word of God, so that America began to lose the influence of the Puritan way of life. We must all realize that this is why today the nation is facing a crisis and repent upon the realization that the only way for us to live is for there to be a renewed government, society, and church that returns to the Word of God. Let us open our ears to hear the Word of the living God who is the same yesterday, today, and forever. “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he chose for his inheritance”(Ps. 33:12). “Return O Israel, to the Lord your God. Your sins have been your downfall! Take words with you and return to the Lord…”(Ho. 14:1, 2).
