재난을 대비하는 크리스천의 자세

지난 3월 11일 오후 일본 도호쿠 지역에서 9.0도의 대지진과 이어서 발생한 쓰나미로 인하여 수만 명이 사망하거나 실종되고 수십만 명의 이재민이 발생하였다. 여기에 후쿠시마 원자력발전소의 화재와 폭발 사고로 방사능이 유출되어 일본 열도가 방사능 공포 가운데 휩싸이게 되었다. 지금 일본은 지진과 쓰나미 그리고 원전 방사능 유출의 대재난으로 고통을 당하고 있다. 일본은 지진 대비가 세계에서 가장 잘 되어 있는 국가이나 이번과 같은 천재지변에는 속수무책이었다. 세계에서 최고로 안전성을 보장한다는 일본의 원전 기술력은 지진으로 인해 무용지물이 되고 말았다. 이런 재난 가운데서도 일본인들은 침착성을 잃지 않고 질서를 지켰다. 죽음 앞에서도 다른사람을 배려하는 그들의 문화가 지구촌을 감동시키고 있다. 일본의 대지진은 인간의 한계를 적나라하게 보여준다. 과학이 최첨단으로 발달한 이 과학만능시대에도 인간의 지혜와 과학이 천재비변을 막을 수 없는 것이 연약한 인간의 한계인 것이다. 지금 우리가 사는 이 시대는 주님의 재림 전에 있으리라고 한 종말론적 징후들이 전 세계적으로 나타나는 마지막 때이다. 세계 도처에 전쟁과 기근과 지진이 일어나고 적그리스도들이 일어나 많은 사람을 미혹하고 있다. 일본의 대지진을 통하여 우리는 지금이 마지막 때임을 알고 영적으로 깨어 일어나야 한다. 성경은 도적같이 임하는 주의 날을 대비하여 “거룩한 행실과 경건함으로 하나님의 날이 임하기를 바라보고 간절히 사모하라”(벧후 3:11, 12)라고 권면하고 있다. 우리는 언제 우리에게도 닥칠지 모르는 재난을 사전에 대비할 뿐 아니라 인류의 생사화복을 주관하시는 하나님께로 돌아와야 한다. 인간의 한계를 자각하고 전능하신 창조주 하나님 앞에 겸허하게 무릎 꿇는 자세가 무엇보다 필요하다. 엄청난 재난을 당한 일본 국민들을 하나님께서 사랑하시고 위로해 주시기를 기원한다. 우리 모두 그리스도의 따뜻한 사랑으로 일본을 가슴에 품고 그들을 위해 기도하며 사랑의 손길을 펴자. 그리하여 이번 기회에 일본이 팔백만 우상을 버리고 살아 계신 하나님께로 돌아오는 계기가 되게 하자.How a Christian Should Prepare for a Natural Disaster On the morning of March 11th, Northern Japan was devastated by a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami that caused 11,532 fatalities,16,351 to be missing, and half a million people to be relocated. On top of this, in Fukushima Prefecture, an explosion and damage to the cooling systems in the nuclear power plant caused by the earthquake, leaves the Japanese living in real fear of radiation exposure. At the present the Japanese are still reeling from the aftermath of the devastating earthquake and tsunami, while gripped in fear of radiation exposure. In spite of Japan being the most well-prepared country when it comes to earthquakes, it was simply helpless against the natural catastrophes that just hit them. Even their guarantees that they had the safest nuclear plants came to be mere empty words in the face of the earthquake’s destruction. Even in the midst of the chaos created by the natural disasters, the Japanese citizens did not lose their calm composures but kept their order. The world is moved and touched by their culture and their willingness to take care of others’ needs first even in the face of death. The massive earthquake in Japan clearly showed man’s limits in the face of natural disasters. Even in this age of advanced science and technology, man’s wisdom and knowledge of science cannot prevent a natural disaster; such is the limit of weak human beings. This generation that we are currently living in is the last days before the Lord’s second coming in which the signs of the last days written about in the Bible are appearing around the world. Different corners of the earth are plagued by wars, famines, and earthquakes, and many people are led astray by antichrists. In witnessing the massive earthquake in Japan, we must realize that these are the last days, and we must wake ourselves up spiritually. The Bible warns us of the day of the Lord that will come to us like a thief in the night, saying, “Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat”(2 Pet. 3:11,12). Not only should we prepare in advance for the natural disasters that may hit any of us at anytime, but we must return to the Lord who is sovereign over the life and death of all humankind. More than anything we need to recognize the limits of man and fall on our knees before the all-powerful Creator God. I pray that God will love and comfort the people of Japan who endured such devastation. With the deep love of Christ, let us place Japan in our hearts and pray for its people, as we extend our hands of love towards them. In doing so, may this become an opportunity for Japan to cast off its eight million idols and return to the living Lord.
