“그 중에 제일은 사랑이라” 이 말은 바울 사도가 많은 고린도 교인들에게 보내는 첫 번 서신의 13장 마지막 절에 기록한 구절이다. “그런즉, 믿음, 소망, 사랑, 이 세 가지는 항상 있을 것인데 그 중에 제일은 사랑이라.”사람이 살아가는데 있어서 제일 귀한 것이 무엇일까? 사람에 따라 가치의 기준이 다를 수 있으나 삶의 본질을 바로 터득 한 자라면, 그 중에 제일은 사랑이라는 말에 동의할 것이다. 사람은 사랑하는 존재, 사랑받는 존재, 사랑을 추구하는 존재이다. 그러므로 사랑에 결핍된 자는 결코 만족이 없고 행복할 수가 없는 것이다.나의 고등학교 음악 선생은 6.25 전쟁으로 가족을 잃고 홀로 마산으로 피난 온 미남 성악가였다. 그가 홀로 창가에 기대어 먼 하늘을 바라보며 사랑하는 가족을 그리며 부르던 노래의 구절이 생각난다.사랑의 기쁨은 어느덧 사라지고사랑의 슬픔만 영원히 남았네눈물로 보낸 나의 사랑이여그대 나를 버리고 가는가 야속하구나이 노래와 같이 인간들의 사랑은 언제 비극으로 끝날지 모르는 불완전하고 유한한 사랑이다.그러나 오늘 사도 바울이 외친 “그 중에 제일은 사랑이라”의 사랑은 ‘아가페 사랑’ 즉 하나님께로부터 오는 거룩한 사랑, 무한한 사랑, 조건 없는 사랑, 선수적인 사랑을 말한다. 이 사랑은 영원히 죽고 망할 우리를 위해 외 아들 예수 그리스도를 보내 주신 사랑이다. 우리의 죄와 허물을 그 아들의 십자가의 보혈로 씻어 주시고 우리를 자녀 삼으신 하나님 아버지의 거룩한 사랑이다. 예수 그리스도를 통하여 받는 아가페 사랑만이 인생의 갈증을 영원히 해결해 준다. 이 사랑만이 사랑에 굶주린 인생의 영혼을 만족히 채워줄 수 있는 진정한 사랑인 것이다.성 어거스틴은 젊어서 수사학 교수라는 명예와 부귀를 한 몸에 지니는 당대의 젊은 지성인이었다. 그러나 그는 진정한 사랑에 목말라 아프리카와 유럽을 배회하고 허랑방탕하며 집시와 같은 생활을 하였다. 그러던 어느 날 로마서 13장 11-14절을 읽고 예수 그리스도를 영접한 후 텅 비어 있던 그의 영혼이 예수 그리스도의 사랑으로 가득 채워졌을 때 그는 과거의 죄를 회개하며 참회록 서두에 이렇게 기록하였다.‘오 사랑의 주여! 내 영혼의 한 간방에 당신이 들어와 주시옵소서.허물어진 벽들은 당신이 수리해 주시옵소서. 당신을 노엽게만 하던 죄인입니다.’그 후 그는 바울 신학을 집대성한 은총의 신학자로 그리스도의 무한한 사랑을 만천하에 입증하는 자가 되었다.영혼의 갈증으로 고민하는 젊은이들과 인생의 여로에서 사랑에 메말라 굶주린 사람들이 굳게 닫힌 마음의 문, 영혼의 문을 활짝 열고 바다보다 깊고 하늘보다 높은 아버지 하나님의 그 영원한 사랑을 받아 풍성히 누리는 자들이 되기를 기원한다.“The Greatest of These is Love” “The greatest of these is love.” These words were written in the last verse of chapter 13 of the first epistle that Apostle Paul sent to the many members of the Corinthian church. “And now these three remain: faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these is love.” What is the most important thing in a person’s life? Although depending on the individual, one’s priorities may differ, if the person has correctly grasped one’s true nature, he or she would agree that the greatest of these is love. Human beings love, receive love, and desire love. Therefore, a person who lacks love, is unfulfilled and unhappy. My high school music teacher was a handsome vocalist who had lost his whole family during the Korean War and escaped to Ma-san all by himself. I remember the lyrics of the song he used to plaintively sing as he leaned against a window and gazed towards heaven longing for his loved ones. The joy of love suddenly vanished Only the sadness of love remains forever My love I sent away in tears Are you truly leaving me? How cruel you are As expressed by these words, man’s love, which is transient, can end in tragedy at anytime leading to anxiety. However, the love that Apostle Paul spoke of in “the greatest of these is love” is ‘agape love’, and thus, the holy love that comes from God which is infinite, unconditional, and initiated by God Himself. This love is the love that sent Jesus Christ His only Son for us, who were headed towards eternal death and damnation. This is the holy love of God the Father that cleansed our sins and flaws with the redeeming blood of His Son upon the cross, and adopted us as His children. It is only this agape love received through Jesus Christ that can eternally satisfy our thirst in life. Only this love is the true love that can fully satisfy and fill the souls which have been starved for love. As an esteemed young monk and professor, Saint Augustine possessed both wealth and honor. However, in pursuit of true love, he lived like a gypsy wandering through Africa and Europe. Then one day, having accepted Jesus Christ after reading Romans chapter 13, verses 11-14, his empty and insatiable soul overflowed with the love of Jesus Christ and he repented of his past sins and wrote in his confessions: ‘O Lord of love! Please come into an empty room in my soul. Please restore the crumbling bricks. I am a sinner who used to only displease you.’Afterwards, he became a witness of Christ’s infinite love as a theologian who made a comprehensive compilation of Paul’s theology. I pray that the troubled and thirsty souls of the young men and women, and those starved for love in this journey of life, will open wide their doors to their souls and receive and abundantly enjoy the Father God’s eternal love, which is deeper than the ocean and higher than the heavens.
