그리스도와 그의 나라를 위하여

'For Christ and His Kingdom'은 시카고에 소재한 크리스찬 명문 대학인 위튼 대학 정문에 쓰여진 글이다. 이 대학은 말씀과 신앙의 경건훈련을 통하여 금세기를 책임질 수많은 크리스찬 인재들을 배출하고 있다.

예수께서 천국 복음을 전파하기 시작하시면서 안드레와 시몬, 야고보와 요한을 부르셨을 때 그들은 고기잡는 그물과 배와 아비를 버려두고 예수님을 좇아 최초의 크리스찬의 삶을 시작하였다.

그러나 예수께서 인류 구원을 위한 십자가의 수난을 예고하셨을 때 제자들은 그 의미를 바로 이해하지 못하고 있었다. 그래서 서로 누가 크냐고 다투었고 주의 나라에서 누가 더 높은 자리를 차지할 것이냐는 문제로 심적 암투가 일게 되었다.

바로 그 즈음 야고보와 요한의 어미는 예수께 조용히 찾아와서 "나의 두 아들을 주의 나라에서 하나는 주의 우편에, 하나는 주의 좌편에 앉게 경하소서"라고 요청하였다. 주님은 "너희 구하는 것을 너희가 알지 못하는도다. 나의 마시려는 잔을 너희가 마실 수 있느냐"라고 말씀하셨고 저희는 주님이 마시려는 고난의 잔, 죽음의 잔의 의미도 알지 못한 채 "할 수 있나이다"라고 대답하였다.

열 제자가 듣고 야고보와 요한에 대하여 분히 여길 때 주님은 다시 말씀하시기를 "누구든지 크고자 하는 자는 너희를 섬기는 자가 되고 너희 중에 누구든지 으뜸이 되고자 하는 자는 너희 종이 되어야 하니라"고 하셨다.

전에도 주님은 그 따르는 제자들에게 "아무든지 나를 따라 오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 좇을 것이니라 누구든지 제 목숨을 구원코자 하면 잃을 것이요 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라"고 말씀하셨다.

크리스찬이란 그리스도인 곧 그리스도의 사람이란 뜻이다. 크리스찬은 주님의 부르심에 응하여 자기를 포기하고 따르는 자이며, 그의 나라를 위하여 자기를 바치는 자이다. 크리스찬은 구경꾼이 아니다. 구경꾼은 말을 많이 하는 자나 몸 바쳐 수고하느 ㄴ일꾼은 말대신 자신의 시간과 물질, 재능과 몸을 바치는 자이다.

1967년 6월 5일, 이스라엘과 팔레스타인 간에 치열한 전쟁이 일어났다. 4천여 년 전 아브라함의 아들 이삭은 에서와 야곱 쌍둥이 아들을 낳았는데, 그들은 복중에서부터 싸우며 경쟁 속에 태어났고 자라면서도 계속 장자권 문제로 갈등을 빚었다. 그 후 그들의 후손은 대대로 반목질시하여 전쟁을 치루어 왔다. 6일 전쟁은 야곱의 후손인 이스라엘과, 아브라함의 서자 이스마엘과 에서의 후손인 팔레스타인과의 대결전이었다.

그 때 미국에 유학 온 유대인 학생들은 앞다투어 학교로 찾아와 조국을 위하여 싸우러 간다고 휴학계를 내고 이스라엘로 속속 돌아갔다. 그러나 아랍계 학생들은 학교 당국에 자국 영사관에서 자신들의 소재를 물으면 어디로 갔는지 모른다고 해달라는 말을 남기고 자신의 안일을 위하여 사라져 버렸다. 결국 이 전쟁은 소수이나 저예 지원병으로 무장된 이스라엘의 승리로 6일만에 끝나 버렸다.

윌 모두 영원한 왕이신 주 예수 그리스도와 우리의 조국 하나님 나라를 위하여 우리의 남은 생애를 기꺼이 바치는 참된 크리스찬이 되었으면 한다.


For Christ and His Kingdom. This phrase is found at the main entrance of Wheaton College, a prestigious Christian college in Chicago. This school is producing numerous talented Christians, who will lead the world in this century.
When Jesus called Andrew, Simon, James and John at the beginning of his ministry, they abandoned their nets, boats and father to follow Jesus and became first Christians.
However, when Jesus prophesied his agony to come for the salvation of the world, his disciples did not understand the meaning of it. This is why they argued about who was greater among themselves and who would take the higher seat in the heaven.
Around this time, the mother of James and John came up to Jesus and said, Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom. Jesus replied, You don't know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup I am going to drink? Without knowing what it meant to drink the cup of agony and death, they answered, We can.
To the other ten disciples, who were indignant with James and John, Jesus said, Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.
Before this incident, Jesus had also told his disciples, If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.
Christians are the people of Christ. Christians are the ones who answer Gods calling in denying himself to follow Christ. They must dedicate themselves for His kingdom. Christians are not spectators. Spectators only talk so much whereas the participants offer their own time, materials, talent and even whole body.
On June 5th of 1967, a fierce war broke out between Israel and Palestine. More than four thousand years ago, Abrahams son Isaac had had twin brothers. They jostled each other even in the womb of their mother. They were born and raised in competition and conflicted with each other over the birthright. Ever since then, their descendants constantly clashed and waged war against each other. The Six Day War broke out between Israel, the descendants of Jacob, and Palestine, the descendants of Ishmael, who was the son of Abrahams concubine.
When the war began, the Jewish students in the United States applied for leave of absence from school to go back to Israel and fight for their country. Nevertheless, many of Arabic students asked their school not to tell their consulates where they would be and disappeared for their safety. As a result, this war ended with the victory of Israel, the small number of elite troops.
I hope all of us will be the true Christians, who dedicate their lives for our everlasting king Jesus Christ and for our nation, the kingdom of God.
